  1. For the price the card games are fine. But hoyle has included another online gameing program, that unless you pay very close attention during the installation will install on your computer and take over your browser and in general act like you’ve been hit with a virus or some other nasty. As I said the Hoyle portion is fine But look out for The “King of Cheap Games Solitaire” on install.

  2. This product is the bane of all who want to maintain control of their computer. It’s what gives internet vendors a bad reputation. In addition to the card games, you will receive overrides on your setup which does nothing to enhance the functionality. This product embodies all that I am wary of when purchasing software. However, if you like KCG signins and other advertisements, step up to the bar and spend your money. For my part, I wish I had never ordered what I thought to be inocuous card game software.

  3. This version has no personality. I am using Mac with el Capitan, and the characters are stiff and unnatural with mechanical voices. I copied over my old version of Hoyle Card Games, assuming this version would be far superior. Boy, was I wrong.

  4. My 85 year-old dad had a version of the Hoyle Games so old that it must have been written for Windows 95. We had managed to keep it working all the way till our recent upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Unfortunately, after hours of fooling with different configurations I had to throw in the towel…there was no way to get his old version of Hoyle to work with Win10. He loved that game, and for me to tell him that it was no longer an option broke my heart. After MUCH reading, I decided that this 2008 version might be the best compromise between what many were calling ‘awful’ newer versions of the Hoyle Card Games software, and hopefully a Hoyle version new enough that it would not choke with Windows 10. Too old and it might have less of a chance working. Newer, and you’re saddled with a game that has been panned by other Hoyle Card Games lovers of earlier versions. I think we picked a winner…with a (very) small caveat.Installation is weird…insert the disk, and Windows 10 scans the whole thing before it begins the installation. Be patient…this may take 4 or 5 or 6 minutes. Once done, Windows will ask if you’d like to install the program. If that’s what you’re looking to do, go for it.Once installed, the game does NOT need the disk inserted to play. Might sound like a no-brainier, but the old version my dad used for nigh-on 17 years required the disk to remain in the drive to have the character voices (which is something of a major attraction to the game for my dad and many others). Probably because the old .wav files used too much space in a day when hard drive sizes were a few hundred megabytes (or considerably less than the system memory in virtually any modern computer). Now for the (very) small caveat: If you try to play the Blackjack game OR the Miami Solitaire, you may be in for a frustrating time. I have not tried EVERY game yet, but at least these two require a dedicated graphics window and overlay. What that means is that since Windows 10 handles this graphics situation differently from earlier versions of Windows, you may end up with no way to display the screen, or even ctrl-alt-deleting the running program may leave you with a hidden taskbar that refuses to come back without a reboot. I found a rather clunky way to get these programs to work, but then I later found a program patch on the Encore.com website. I don’t think Amazon will allow a url, so I’ll simply say that you should Google ‘Hoyle Card Games 2008 Patch’, and the result from the support.encore.com website ought to be the right one. File name:’HoyleCardGames2008Patch.exe’, about 28MB. Once applied, Blackjack and Miami Solitaire now function as intended. Yay!So, if you’re a fan of the older Hoyle Card Games programs, this is likely the one you want. With the patch applied, looks like everything is working the way it’s supposed to. Perhaps my only gripe now is that the intro music is horrid (like out of some 1980 porno flick or some such), and if you want music in-game, you’ll have to put up with it, since once you are in a game, you can select something else (Jazz, ocean waves, cheezy rock, etc..). Right now, this is selling for less than $5 and free shipping with Amazon Prime, so you really cannot go wrong here.Edit: One more stumbling block…dad needs the display scaling turned up to 125% to see what’s on the screen better. Unfortunately, that messes with the game. Not all the card games with the program are affected, but some of the ‘most likely to be used’ are, such as the Miami Solitaire and the ever-troublesome-but-lots-of-fun Blackjack. So if you’re getting weird behavior as the game starts or as a particular card game is selected, in Win10 go to Settings, System, Display, and check that the slider is backed all the way down to 100%. Win7, 8, and 8.1 also have similar settings, but you’ll have to track those down on your own.

  5. In my opinion this is truly pathetic software. I am not so much concerned with the rudimentary quality of the cartoon characters. More importantly I was expecting card playing that follows the program’s own stated rules, and artificial intelligence that plays reasonably well. This software fails miserably on both counts. My particular concern is with Bridge. Regarding Hearts, I simply cannot believe how dumb the robotic players are. I can win at its Hearts game by attempting to “Shoot the Moon” with almost any hand. The bots are completely complicit in allowing me to be successful.I bought three copies of this software six months ago. One was for me and two for Christmas presents. I am embarrassed to have been a donor. When I complained to the company back then, the same PR guy who responds to reviews here asked be to become in essence a much belated beta tester. I have not heard anymore from him regarding that. If I do, I will decline, since in my opinion this mess is a total waste of anyone’s time.

  6. Works with Windows 10! I turned on my computer, inserted the disc into my dvd reader, and the nothing popped up. I restarted the computer with the disc in the dvd reader, clicked on the disc icon, and it started installing. Yea!!!

  7. I just got the Hoyle Official Card Games Collection a day or so ago. I am very happy with it. I wanted it mostly because it had the game of Bridge on it. I hadn’t played the game in years and thought I had better hone my skills with a computer game. The first day I got it, I spent 4 hours just playing Bridge. I was almost cross-eyed afterwards but it was worth it. It’s very easy to install. Just slip the CD in once you get the card games and follow the simple instructions of downloading it. It jast takes a few minutes. It’s pretty much self-explanatory after that. Some reviews I read about it complained about the resolution of the “newest edition” (this one) but I don’t have a problem with it. To me, it was worth the purchase. I think the ultimate card player would like to buy this product.

  8. Avoid this one and get the 2008 (Old Version). In this one the cards are tiny and scrunched together and it’s sometimes hard to distinguish clubs from spades. There is a good rule : If it is good they either discontinue it or ruin it. That certainly applies here.

  9. The main thing to me is that it works with Windows 10. I have searched for one that would. The games are excellent! I have enjoyed the games for years on my other computer. The only fault I find is it doesn’t fill the whole screen but it is big enough to enjoy. This is the only one that I know of that works with Windows 10. Lots of fun for the money.I forgot to say that you think this isn’t going to load but it will. It scans the whole thing first which takes several minutes. Then finally the option will come up to install it. Give it up to five minutes before you give up. It will load. It is a great game!
